Google has announced an investment of $3 billion to set up a data centre campus in Indiana and expand sites in Virginia. The announcement comes a day after Amazon.com’s cloud computing arm committed $11 billion toward new data centres in Indiana and creating 1,000 jobs.
“The information that we deliver to people around the world — through Google Search, YouTube, Maps and our many other products — is supported by our infrastructure. Data centers keep our products and services running around the clock and around the world, and power Google’s AI innovation,” the company said in a blog post.
Google’s $3 billion in investments will be to build or expand data centre campuses in Virginia and Indiana.
Virginia: Google is investing an additional $1 billion, with plans to expand its three existing Virginia data centre campuses — bringing the total investment to date in the state to more than $4 billion.
Indiana: In the Midwest, the company has announced a $2 billion investment in its newest data centre campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
“Today we’re announcing a $3B investment to expand our data center campuses in Virginia and build our newest data center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We’re excited to support jobs and local communities across 26 US states,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a post on X.
Google announces $75 million fund to train AmericansThe company has also announced a $75-million Google AI Opportunity Fund to train Americans on AI skills.
“Through this fund, Google.org will work with nonprofit, education, and other sectors to train one million Americans of all backgrounds and provide them with AI skills at no cost,” the company said.
