Stimulus update: Applications open for property tax rebate of up to $1,000 in Pennsylvania for some

Eligible residents in Pennsylvania can apply for the state’s property tax and rent rebate of up to $1,000, which will be distributed in the second half of the year.

The rebates are to homeowners or renters in the Keystone State who are 65 and older, at least 50 years old and have a dead spouse, or an adult with a disability, according to the state. To qualify, an applicant must make $45,000 or less annually, with the income requirements tied to the cost of living.

Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) announced on Tuesday that applications had opened for the 2024 rebate and touted enhancements to the rebates agreed to through legislation passed last year.

“The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program has long been a lifeline for our seniors — especially those on a fixed income — and that’s why my Administration brought together folks on both sides of the aisle to expand this tax rebate to an additional 175,000 Pennsylvanians,” Shapiro said in a statement. “This is what it looks like when we work together to put partisanship aside and get stuff done for Pennsylvania.”

The rebates have a maximum value of $1,000, varying by the applicant’s income.

Those who make $8,000 or less annually can get a rebate of up to $1,000, those who make between $8,001 and $15,000 annually can receive a rebate of up to $770, applicants who make between $15,001 and $18,000 can get a rebate of up to $460, and applicants who make between $18,001 and $45,000 can receive a rebate of up to $380, according to the state.

Applications for the rebate are open until June 30, with the rebates being sent out beginning on July 1. Eligible residents can apply for the rebate via the state’s online filing system.
