A nearly 17-acre property in Villanova that inspired the 1940 movie “The Philadelphia Story” with Katharine Hepburn is on the market for $13.45 million, writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.
The property, referred to as “Albermarle,” has four buildings, including a refurbished stone clock tower.
It was part of a much larger 800-acre, 75-building Ardrossan Estate owned by the Montgomery Scott-Wheeler family in the early 20th century.
The larger estate, has been subdivided over time and sold off.
Albermarle was the original part of the estate that contained Hope Montgomery Scott’s 40-horse barn and the clock tower, according to listing agent Lisa Yakulis with Kurfiss Sotheby’s International Real Estate.
It includes the main house, a twin guest building, a party barn and the clock tower, which has been converted into office space.
A pool, tennis court, terraces and gardens complete the property.
“It was purposely designed to be understated, which I think is a significant reason why it’s so beautiful,” Yakulis said. “It’s very understated but elegant at every, every turn.”
The property has been upgraded over the last 20 years.
