Padre Island property tax protest event

Rafa Bejar with the Texas Public Policy Foundation said this type of education for homeowners should empower them.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Residents gathered at the Island Presbyterian Church Tuesday to get information on how to protest their property tax appraisals

Rafa Bejar with the Texas Public Policy Foundation said that knowing how property appraisals work can be a tricky process.

“Property tax appraisals are set up in a mass formula and doesn’t take into account the individuals true value of their homes,” Bejar said.

The event is a resource Port Aransas resident Trina Allen said gave her invaluable advice, especially as her value skyrocketed.

“My property value for this year went up a little over $150,000 from last year,” Allen said “That’s a large number for me, for us.”

The seminar gave property owners an idea of what to expect when they go to the appraisal office.

“Trying to understand what our rights are,” Allen said. “I mean there are things I learned that I didn’t know I had a right to. So, I think that’s important for any property owner out there.”

Bejar said that this type of education for homeowners should empower them.

“80 to 90 percent of the people don’t protest because they don’t either know how or they’re not even aware that they can protest,” he said.

For those who still may be hesitant to protest, Allen has a simple peace of advice.

“Take pictures along the way, make sure that you keep your receipts for any repairs that you’re doing and again, go protest,” she said.
