The listing period is from Jan. 2 through Jan. 31.

In North Carolina, the three main elements of the tax system are real property, personal property and motor vehicles.

Real property consists of land and buildings, and their value is assessed every four years by the county. Motor vehicle values are assessed by the state when their registration is renewed.

According to the North Carolina General Statutes, all property that is not defined or taxed as “real estate” or “real property” is considered to be personal property. 

Individual personal property that should be listed includes unregistered (untagged) vehicles that did not have an active North Carolina registration on Jan. 1; utility trailers with permanent/multi-year tags; mobile homes; watercraft; and aircraft, including ultralights and gliders.

Business personal property is taxable whether it is owned, leased, rented or otherwise used by the business. The Business Personal Property Division of the Davidson County Tax Assessor’s Office is responsible for ensuring that all business and professional property is listed and assessed yearly. This type of property includes machinery and equipment, office furniture, fixtures, computer equipment, leasehold improvements, supplies and office vehicles. Information must also be provided regarding leased property.

Listings that are not filed prior to Jan. 31 are subject to a 10% late listing penalty.

In order to file a individual personal property, business personal property or rental property listing online, property owners need the account number and record number at the top of the first page of the property listing form mailed to them by Davidson County. If a listing is submitted online, the paper form does not have to be returned.
