MAYVILLE — A rental property owner who owns a dilapidated summer home in the village is upset that she can’t get a building permit to address her structure.
A summons has previously been filed regarding the property in state Supreme Court.
During a recent Mayville Village Board meeting, Ellen Shepherd of Warren was in attendance. She owns the property at 199 Sea Lion Dr.
During the public portion of the meeting, she expressed her complaint about her struggles to improve the property, which she wants to rent out. She said she has hired a contractor to make the necessary improvements, but has been denied.
“We’re not allowed on the property and the house has been condemned and I don’t know what to do. No one tells me anything,” she said.
Shepherd said she has another property in Mayville, along with rentals in other communities.
She said she has hired an engineer who determined the property is structurally sound. Her plans for the property were submitted to the village board.
Shepherd said she was told by the code office that if she wants to tear the property down, the village would permit that, but added “we don’t want to do that.”
Mayor Rick Syper thanked Shepherd for her comments but did not address her concerns further.
In December, the village board filed a summons in State Supreme Court regarding the property. In the court summons, there were 16 property maintenance code violations and five fire code violations noted.
After the meeting Syper said this property has been a problem for the last 10 years. He didn’t go into details, other than stand by the code office’s determinations.
