BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Gov. Josh Shapiro spoke to a packed room of seniors in Bethlehem Tuesday, surrounded by lawmakers.
“As your governor, I’ve traveled all across this great Commonwealth and I’ve heard firsthand from so many seniors who are facing real struggles right now,” Shapiro said.
His big announcement?
The Property Tax-Rent Rebate program is increasing the maximum rebate from $650 to $1,000.
“You know that the Property Tax-Rent Rebate Program has been a lifeline for our seniors, especially seniors who are on a fixed income,” Shapiro said.
In Northampton County alone, County Executive Lamont McClure says about 3700 seniors are going to benefit.
“With a senior citizen, generally speaking they have a residual mortgage, but their property taxes is what is killing them,” McClure said.
It’s not just the rebate that’s increasing the income cap that decides whether a senior or person with disabilities qualifies is also increasing.
“So as your Social Security goes up, so too will that income cap, so you’re not going to get priced out of the market again,” Shapiro said.
Overall, the Shapiro administration estimates another 175,000 seniors will now qualify.
“I know you all have worked really hard throughout your lives and we want you to enjoy your golden years and I know for many, an extra $400 in your pocket will help make that much easier,” Shapiro said.
Applicants are encouraged to use myPath – which is the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue’s online filing system – to apply for rebates on property taxes and rent paid during 2023.
