MONDAY, EDMOND VOTED TO TAKE THE OWNER OF THIS PROPERTY ALONG ADA STREET TO COURT, SAYING IT’S JUST NOT UP TO THE CITY COUNCIL STANDARD. AFTER BEING DECLARED A PUBLIC NUISANCE. HOLES IN THE WALL SCREENS MISSING BROKEN WINDOWS, GRAFFITI, COCKROACHES, BOTH LIVING AND DEAD. AND WITH IT SO CLOSE TO UCO AND NORTHERN HILLS ELEMENTARY, THESE ARE PROBLEMS, THE COMMUNITY TELLS ME THEY CAN’T STAND FOR. GETTING RID OF THIS PROPERTY WOULD BE A WOULD BE A GREAT STEP FORWARD FOR EDMOND. NOW THE CITY IS TAKING LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THE OWNER. THAT COULD TAKE AROUND 60 TO 90 DAYS, THE LANDLORD’S ATTORNEY TOLD ME MANY OF THE VIOLATIONS THEY WERE TOLD ABOUT WERE ON THE SECOND AND THIRD FLOORS, WHERE NO ONE WAS LIVING. OUR INSPECTION PROVED OTHERWISE THAT THERE WERE INDIVIDUALS THAT HAD BEEN OCCUPYING THE SECOND AND THIRD FLOOR, WITH AROUND 20 VETERANS LIVING HERE THROUGH THE VA’S HOUSING PROGRAM, THE EDMOND AMERICAN LEGION IS WORKING TO GET THEM $500 EACH TO HELP WITH THE SWITCH TRANSFERRING UTILITIES. YOU’RE GOING TO NEED DEPOSIT MONEY FOR THAT. WE KNOW THAT YOU’RE GOING TO BE HAVING OTHER MOVING EXPENSES. WHILE SOME IN THE COMMUNITY SAY THIS IS THE RIGHT SOLUTION, IF THE OWNER WANTS TO KEEP IT, THEY NEED TO MAKE AMENDS QUICKLY. The city of Edmond labeled a property a public nuisance and is taking the owner to court in an attempt to take over his apartment complex. The court could order the owner of the New Life Village to sell it or tear it down. On Monday, Edmond voted to take the owner of the property along Ayers Street to court, saying it wasn’t up to the city council’s standard after being declared a public nuisance. “Holes in the wall, screens missing, broken windows, graffiti, cockroaches both living and dead,” said Tom Robins, the city councilor representing Ward 1. With the apartment complex so close to the University of Central Oklahoma and Northern Hills Elementary, these are problems people in the community said they can’t stand for. “Getting rid of this property would be a great step forward for Edmond,” said Deric Duncan with the VFW. The city’s legal action against the owner could take around 60-90 days. The landlord’s attorney previously told KOCO 5 that many of the violations they were told about were on the second and third floors, where no one was living. “Our inspection proved otherwise, that there were individuals occupying the third floor,” Robins said. With around 20 veterans living there through the VA’s housing program, the Edmond American Legion is working to get them $500 each to help with the switch. “Transferring utilities, you’re going to need deposit money for that.
