LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — High efficiency windows may have several perks for your home, but they can create big problems for your neighbors.
Consumer Reporter John Matarese shows how they are even damaging cars so you don’t waste your money.
They can keep your home warm in the winter, and cool in the summer, but for homeowner Jenny Stepp, that is the least of her worries.
“It’s melting and bubbling up all over this,” Stepp said.
Stepp recently discovered that the vinyl siding on her house was melting, even in the dead of winter.
The reason? Sunlight is reflecting off the windows of her neighbor’s home, which then focuses like a laser beam onto her house.
Stepp said it is not just her siding either, the plastic parts on her car are also melting.
“I just got my car in May of 2023,” Stepp said. “So from May until now it’s melting.”
Upon contacting the window company, they expressed that they are not responsible for the damages.
Unfortunately, Stepp is not the only one. The National Association of Home Builders has hundreds of complaints about this problem.
They suggest talking with your neighbor about changing out to a standard glass window and offering to split the cost with them.
Or, a cheaper solution would be to add a window screen.
If you notice your siding melting, it may be smart to talk to your neighbor on a solution before it gets any worse, so you don’t waste your money.
