Deadline to file for Cook County Property Tax Exemptions is April 29

The deadline for homeowners to apply for property tax exemptions is Monday, April 29. Exemptions are property tax savings that contribute to lowering a property owner’s tax bill.

As a reminder, homeowners must reapply for the Veterans with Disabilities and Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze (the “Senior Freeze”) Exemptions. Seniors and veterans who need to reapply were sent application booklets by the Assessor’s Office. The booklets should be returned by Monday, April 29.

Additionally, all applicants including new homeowners or first-time applicants, can apply online. Accessing the form online is easy, free, and can be completed in under ten minutes.

If a property owner did not receive the booklet, but may be eligible for one of the exemptions, an application should be submitted online or in-person by Monday, April 29.

Exemption forms are available in Spanish, Polish, and simplified Chinese languages. Applications can be downloaded.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Senior Freeze exemption for the 2023 tax year (appearing on tax bills to be paid in the fall of calendar year 2024), taxpayers must meet the following requirements:

  • The property owner must have been born in 1958 or earlier.
  • The property must have been the owner’s principal residence as of January 1, 2022 and January 1, 2023.
  • The combined 2022 income for all members of the owner’s household must have been $65,000 or less.

Savings from the Senior Freeze and all other property tax exemptions will appear on the second installment of 2023 tax bills, which will likely be mailed in July 2024.
