Salem City Council authorizes funding for new Wasena state park

SALEM, Va. (WDBJ) – During the Salem City Council meeting, the council unanimously agreed the city’s manager could sign a deal with Roanoke City to provide funds for a new skate park.

“It is not going to be under the bridge, but it will be in an area of the park. What they will be putting into that area is much, much, much more than what the city said we could ever afford to do for its citizens,” said Mayor Renee Turk.

The new skate park and mountain bike facility will be in the Wasena Area.

Salem plans to provide a one-time distribution of $200,000.

The skate park will be for both public use and large-scale events.

This comes after Moyer Skate Park in Salem, scrapped renovation plans in 2022, leaving skateboarders without an area to roam.

The original plan was for the Moyer Sports Complex renovations to include improvements to the skate park.

But the City of Salem said in a statement that shortly after they broke ground in September 2022, they decided “…adding 10 new pickleball courts in that area would be an excellent use for the space and fit the competition theme of the complex much better.”

“Although I’m sure people are gonna be disappointed to travel farther, and actually it’s going to be a better facility for citizens of the valley,” said Councilman Randy Foley.

When the project is near completion, the city of Roanoke will supply a draft layout of the gateway entrance.

It is expected to be completed in late spring or early summer of 2025.
