DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa could receive up to $5.4 million in opioid settlement funds, according to a statement from Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird Thursday.
On Thursday, Bird announced around $720 million nationwide in opioid settlements with eight drug manufacturers who played a role in the U.S. opioid crisis.
According to a release from the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, “all eight defendants have agreed to proceed with a sign-on period for local governments,” and Iowa could potentially receive over $5 million total.
“This financial settlement is a win because Iowa will use the funds to continue the fight against opioid addiction,” said Attorney General Bird. “However, the true victory is that these companies are prohibited from promoting and marketing the products that have taken lives and changed families forever.”
Some of the settlements also allow states to collect pharmaceutical products meant to assist with opioid overdoses or opioid use disorder. States may also elect to receive cash in lieu of the products.
Seven of the manufacturers, not including Indivior, are banned from promoting opioids and opioid products, producing or selling product that includes more than 40mg of oxycodone per pill, and are required to report suspicious orders.
Indivior will not produce or sell opioid products for the next ten years and will continue its focus to market and sell medications to treat opioid addiction.
