SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has announced it will award $25.1 million in grants for the installation of Direct Current Fast Chargers (DCFC) for electric vehicles throughout the state.
The grants will be used to build 643 ports at 141 locations, including:
- Pilot Flying J Travel Center in Rochelle
- An unnamed gas station in Loves Park
- Road Ranger gas stations in Dixon and Rochelle
The funds come from the Rebuild Illinois capital plan and the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA).
Illinois already authorized $12.6 million for 300 DCFC chargers in 2023, using funds from the 2016 Volkswagen Clean Air Act Civil Settlement, which found the automobile manufacturer cheated on emissions testing.
Locally, the previous grant authorized the installation of DC Fast Chargers at:
- Road Ranger in South Beloit
- Pilot Flying J Travel Center in South Beloit
- An unnamed South Beloit gas station
- BP gas station in Roscoe
“In Illinois, we’re strategically turning our vision for a clean energy future into a reality,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Thanks to recent grant awards, my administration will double the number of publicly available fast charging ports—putting us one step closer to our goal of reaching 100% clean energy by 2050.”
Fast charging stations, also known as Level 3 chargers, can output power up to 350 kW and recharge the car’s battery in less than 30 minutes, depending on the model.
By contrast, the more readily available Level 2 chargers, often found in business parking lots, output up to only 19 kW and are typically used for overnight charging.
DCFC units often have one or more Combined Charging System (CCS) standard plugs, with the possibility of another plug supporting the aging CHAdeMO protocol, reserved for drivers of the Nissan LEAF.
