Georgetown County marina nets federal funding for dock improvements

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WMBF) – State officails say a Georgetown-area marina recently received federal funding for improvements.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said the Heritage Plantation Marina will get $736,336 to improve its dock space as part of the Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) program.

“Using money from excise taxes on fishing equipment, motorboat and small engine fuels and import duties, the program provides funding for marinas across the country to construct, renovate or maintain tie-up facilities and safe harbors for recreational boats 26 feet or more in length,” the agency said in an announcement released Wednesday.

SCDNR says it administers the BIG program in South Carolina through competitive grants.

Officials added the project aims to meet the need for dock space along the Intracoastal Waterway by replacing the marina’s largest floating dock.

“The proposed dock replacement will restore 1100 linear feet of dock space that has been lost due to the deteriorating condition of the existing structure,” the SCDNR said. “The project also includes plans to upgrade the water/electrical utilities on the dock and add security cameras and Wi-Fi access points to the dock area to better cater to the transient boater community.”
