City council members approve to move forward with the second reading of the low-income housing.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) – Evansville city leaders are looking to use funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, once again, to help low-income housing in the River City.
In 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act Fund was introduced to give aid to public health and help community members land back on their feet after the pandemic. Tonight, the idea of using $5.7 million of that fund for low-income housing developments was proposed.
“These grants were for us to help people pay their bills, recovering from COVID and there was such a great need,” says Nikki Walker, the Hope of Evansville Director of Relational and Financial Development.
This funding would give assistance to three different housing projects in the area. One being with the non-profit ‘Hope of Evansville.’ The convenience is all of the money from this fund pays for the whole expense of a development, not just a percentage.
For example, ‘Hope of Evansville’ has already been granted $1.5 million for a 10-unit housing development for low to moderate income seniors, allowing for the older generations to receive support too. 44News was told construction will begin this fall, but there’s more.
“One of the other things this fund has done is attract other developers to our area,” Walker.
It brings a variety of opportunities to also rehab older complexes.
The American Rescue Plan Act Fund has now been approved to make it to the second reading at the next city council meeting on March 11th.
