ALDOT disperses grant funds to municipal airports

The Alabama Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that over $100,000 in state funding would be distributed to two municipal airports to improve their operations. The grants come from ALDOT’s Alabama Airport Improvement Funding program.

The grant distributes funds to support engineering and technical services at public airport facilities.

Shelby County Airport in Shelby County and H. L. “Sonny” Callahan Airport in Fairhope were chosen and will match funds for the projects.

The Shelby County Airport will receive $112,500 for pavement maintenance to a runway and adjoined taxiway.  Shelby County Commission will then add $37,500 in local funds for a total value of $150,000.

The H. L. “Sonny” Callahan Airport will receive $82,581 from the Federal Aviation Administration for a 13,500-square-foot parking lot for a new terminal. The City of Fairhope will also provide $4,588 from local funds and $4,588 from ALDOT funds. The project will be valued at $91,757.

The dispersion of these grants comes just days after the FAA announced a $91,000 grant awarded to the Auburn University Regional Airport to expand its airport apron.

ALDOT anticipates awarding $8 million in state funds to Alabama’s various local airports during the 2024 FY.
