Byrnes will lead the management of university resources, including the budget, facilities, and operations, in support of executing the strategic vision. He will continue the university’s efforts to streamline policies and procedures critical to the goal of becoming a more nimble and adaptable organization.

“Paul’s collaborative approach to leadership and his vast experience in both operational management and finance in an academic setting made him an ideal candidate for this role. I look forward to working together as we continue the momentum we’ve built here on Rocky Top,” said Plowman.

“I am also greatly appreciative of the leadership that Allen Bolton has provided as interim senior vice chancellor over the past year and a half. He stepped in to serve his alma mater at an important time for the university, providing steady leadership and guidance.”

Byrnes has spent the past 16 years of his career at Emory, most recently as vice provost for academic finance. In that role, he works with school and academic unit deans and chief business officers to improve administrative structures and resource optimization, participates in key university finance and academic committees, and assists the senior vice provost for resource planning in managing internal provost departmental budgets, the usage of endowment proceeds and strategic plan resources.

“UT is a university on the rise, and I am excited to work with Chancellor Plowman, Provost John Zomchick and other university leaders to build upon the great work that has already been done,” said Byrnes. “Together, we will work to advance the university on all fronts.”

Before his work with Emory, Byrnes spent 12 years with Delta Air Lines in strategic planning and operational leadership roles. Outside of the office, he is an avid runner and cyclist and has completed numerous marathons, cycling events and triathlons.

Byrnes earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Providence College. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame.
