At first glance, driving through the new estates on Melbourne’s western fringe, the houses look ordinary. Single-storey, brick veneer frontages, finished in a grey monochrome. But look closer and the differences are clear: step-free entrances, extra-wide doorways, and bathrooms designed for wheelchairs. These homes were purpose-built for people with profound disabilities. Dozens of these buildings
