Remodeled, well-known Midland riverfront property offers multigenerational living for $1.15M

MIDLAND, MI – A building once known as the Harbor House and the Shelterhouse is now a giant, remodeled, multigenerational home, and it’s on the market.

The well-maintained home with Chippewa River frontage, 3115 Isabella St., is listed for $1,150,000.

This home is MLive’s House of the Week. Homes of various prices and styles from across the state are showcased every Wednesday.

Christina Reimer of RE/MAX of Midland said the current owners bought the property in 2020 and changed the zoning of the home.

It was originally built as a home in 1937, Reimer said. Fast forward to the late 1990s, the home was repurposed by Harbor House, housing for at-risk teens.

After Harbor House relocated, the property became the site for Shelterhouse, which has since relocated as well, Remier said.

The current owner converted it back into a single-family home with multiple generations in mind. It has two distinct spaces so some family members can live on one side of the home and others can live on the other side, allowing for privacy for all, Remier said.

“It’s just a really nicely maintained home with a lot of possibilities for people with different, maybe non-traditional family setups,” Reimer said.

The main wing has been remodeled with a ranch-style and barrier-free layout featuring a primary suite, a second bedroom with an en suite and an open-concept kitchen.

The second wing is a two-story layout with three bedrooms on the main floor, four bedrooms upstairs, a living room and a kitchen overlooking the yard, according to the listing.

“It’s really kind of just two single family residences with a little bit of a buffer in the middle,” Reimer said. “It would make a really great home for someone who maybe had aging parents or were taking care of a family member and needed a little bit of privacy in between.”

Each wing includes its own HVAC system and laundry area as well, according to the listing.

The property in total offers nine bedrooms and five bathrooms within 10,361 square feet of living space on five acres with Chippewa River frontage.

On the property, the yard features a tennis court, private playground and two detached garages.

Reimer said her favorite part is the view of the river, along with the traditional exterior of the home.

“It has over 380 feet on the river, and I just think that it’s very unique in the fact that you can’t really find river frontage like that in the City of Midland,” Reimer said. “While it offers 10,000 square feet of living space, this home does not feel overwhelming. Thoughtful design and a well-planned layout create a warm, inviting atmosphere that balances spaciousness with comfort.”
