MEDINA, Ohio — With spring in full swing, Medina Building Official Dan Gladish wants to make property owners aware of the city’s tall grass ordinance.
“Grass and weeds should not exceed 6 inches (in height) on any lot within the city,” Gladish said at the May 12 City Council meeting.
“The building department is responsible for enforcement of that ordinance.”
Gladish said the goal is to help property owners comply with the ordinance, as opposed to executing penalties.
He said the first step the building department takes is to talk to the property owner and notify them of the city’s ordinance.
If the property owner does not then comply with the ordinance, the building department will provide them with a written notice of the violation.
If the property owner still doesn’t comply, the building department will hire a third-party landscape contractor to cut the weeds and grass on the property.
The cost of the landscaping fees, as well as any legal costs, are then assessed to the owner’s property taxes.
“Our goal is for everyone to be proud to live in the neighborhoods of this city,” Gladish said.
Also during the council meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Jansen Wehlrey announced that the Memorial Park pool and the splash pads at Ray Mellert Park and Fred Greenwood Park will open for the season on May 24.
“The splash pad at Fred Greenwood Park will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the splash pad at Ray Mellert Park will be open each day from noon to 8 p.m.,” Wehrley said.
“Pool hours will vary based on different programs.”
