Jackson County makes its case in property tax bench trial


RIGHT NOW, THE JACKSON COUNTY PROPERTY ASSESSMENT TRIAL CONTINUES. THIS IS DAY THREE OF THE TRIAL BETWEEN THE COUNTY AND STATE. KMBC MATT FLENER IS THERE TO GIVE US A LOOK AT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM THE COURTROOM. REPORTER. WELL, TODAY HERE AT THE JACKSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE IN DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY, WE’RE EXPECTING THE LATEST FROM THE STATE AS IT PRESENTS EVIDENCE IN THIS TRIAL, WHAT WAS EXPECTED TO BE THE LAST DAY OF THE TRIAL. BUT MAY LAST UNTIL TOMORROW. THE STATE HAS CALLED MULTIPLE WITNESSES TO THE STAND. A MEMBER OF THE STATE TAX COMMISSION TOLD THE COURTROOM SOME INSPECTIONS LASTED LESS THAN A MINUTE, AND A FORMER HEARING OFFICER ALSO CLAIMS HE WAS FIRED AFTER HE WAS ASKED BY THE HEAD OF TYLER TECHNOLOGIES TO ADD AN ADDITIONAL 10% TO VALUES ALREADY ASSESSED. AND THEN HE REFUSED AGAIN. THE COUNTY IS EXPECTED TO TAKE THE STAND. WE’RE HEARING FROM GAIL MCCANN BEATTY LATER THIS AFTERNOON. ALSO, THE LEE’S SUMMIT SUPERINTENDENT. Thousands of homeowners in Jackson County are still trying to appeal their property assessments a year after the county massively raised values on properties.

Thousands of homeowners in Jackson County are still trying to appeal their property assessments a year after the county massively raised values on properties.On average, properties went up 30 percent, with some going up over 200 percent. It’s now day three of a bench trial brought against the county by the state of Missouri.On Monday, we expect to hear testimony from the county as it’s their turn to present evidence. As it stands, this will be the final day of the trial.In the first two days of the trial, the state began by calling witnesses to the stand.Of those witnesses, critical testimony came from a former hearing officer who claims he was fired after he was asked by the head of Tyler Technologies to add an additional ten percent to values already assessed and refused.We also heard from a member of the state tax commission who disclosed that after logs were reviewed, it became apparent some inspections lasted less than a minute.Most recently, homeowner after homeowner took the stand.
