Dirt mounds remain at Lundy’s vacant Clinton Street property | Business

City officials were under the impression that Lundy planned to leave the two mounds of dirt on the site and use it to fill in the basement of a one-story building that he plans to demolish.

On Thursday, City Manager Eric F. Wagenaar wasn’t sure whether the work is finished, saying that he planned to talk to Lundy.

“It’s only been a day,” he said Thursday. “We’ll see and will keep an eye on it.”

City code enforcement inspectors went to the site to assess the situation and take photos, and they will now make a recommendation about what the city should do, Wagenaar said.

Code enforcement officials have said previously that there is nothing in city or state codes that prevent property owners from having large mounds of dirt on their land.

Before the work was started on Wednesday, the city received several complaints about the condition of the property.

The 2.5-acre downtown property has sat idle since Lundy’s company, Lunco, purchased it in 2016 for $525,000.

A potential anchor tenant for a 28,500-square-foot office building that Lundy planned to build has bowed out of the project.

The condition of the site, at the conjunction of Clinton, Sherman and Mullin streets, came up at City Council meetings in June.

Lundy has said that he was waiting to complete a Watertown Savings Bank expansion project next door before he would start clearing up the site of debris.

The property is adjacent to Watertown Savings Bank’s main branch, where a 14,000-square-foot addition to combine the bank’s lending department was just completed during the last month or so.
