President Donald Trump on Monday called for California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff to be prosecuted for alleged mortgage fraud.
Trump said the mortgage giant Fannie Mae’s financial crimes division concluded Schiff “engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud” in a Monday morning post on the social media platform Truth Social. The president called on the California Democrat to face prosecution for alleged mortgage fraud for claiming a Maryland home as his primary residence for more than a decade.
“Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must LIVE in CALIFORNIA because he was a Congressman from CALIFORNIA,” Trump wrote. “I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook.”
“Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and CROOKED Adam Schiff (now a Senator) needs to be brought to justice,” Trump continued.
CNN first reported in November 2023 that Schiff claimed a property in Maryland and a condo in Burbank, California, as primary residences.
The California Democrat began claiming the Maryland home as his primary residence in 2003 and again claimed the property as his primary residence when he refinanced his mortgage at least four times.
Trump claimed that the alleged fraud began when Schiff first refinanced his mortgage on the Maryland property in February 2009. Schiff did not designate the residence as a second home until October 2020.
During that time, Schiff also designated the Burbank condo as a primary residence and claimed a homeowners’ tax exemption on the property for at least several years, according to CNN.
Despite running for an open Senate seat in California at the time, the CNN report found that Schiff treated the Maryland property as his full-time residence.
Trump has frequently criticized Schiff’s role in both the Russiagate conspiracy and Trump impeachment efforts.
Spokespersons for Schiff and Fannie Mae did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
