Remodeling options as mortgage rates rise

WEST ALLIS, Wis. — Wisconsinites looking to make home improvements can head to the Wisconsin State Fair Park for the 32nd annual Milwaukee Home & Remodeling Show, hosted by National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

Peter and Sandy Slowak, who live in Waukesha, came to check out what remodeling options they may have.

The Slowaks said there are multiple projects they want to take on to improve their home.

“We have an older home so we are looking to do some work on our kitchen and he wanted the porch redone,” said Sandy Slowak.

“We got a front porch that’s constantly in the weather so we were looking for somebody to do that coating but as we found out here. There’s a minimum square footage so if we are going to have someone come out, it’s probably going to also include the garage,” her husband, Peter Slowak, added.

Michelle Brown, NARI Milwaukee’s executive director, said the event prides itself on showing the various local remodeling contractors that consumers can trust.

Brown said she believes that’s especially important because of the current makeup of the housing market.

“Investing in your home is almost always a good idea. It’s almost always less expensive to reinvest, remodel, than it is to move — especially with today’s mortgage interest rates being so high,” said Brown.

The Slowaks said remodeling parts of their home was an easy decision. The couple is retired and said it’s not only more economical to remodel than move, but their house is their home. They said they hope to spend the rest of their lives there.

“We like the home that we are in. We like the area and the housing prices are not going down at all but we are not looking to move at this stage so we just want to make it the way that we like it,” Sandy Slowak said.

The remodeling show runs through Oct. 16.
