MARQUETTE — While the Jubilee team may have taken home the championship trophy, Teaching Family Homes was the real winner at the inaugural benefit slowpitch softball tournament held June 13-15 at Hurley Field in south Marquette.
Eleven teams ranging from local units to ones coming from Wisconsin helped the charitable organization raise more than $2,000 to support children and families around the Upper Peninsula, according to event organizers.
Led by new TFH director of public relations Tyler McCabe, the group has started a new chapter in community engagement.
“We wanted to create something fun that also makes a real difference,” McCabe said in a news release about the event. “The turnout and support were incredible.
“This is just the beginning. We’re already looking forward to next year.”
He added that Hurley Field was an ideal venue, offering ample seating, a concession stand and a nearby playground that helped make the event family friendly. Spectators had a great weekend of spirited competition, camaraderie and community pride.
Sponsors were an integral part of its success, too, which included Superior Charters and Fish Supply with Austin Johnson, Black River Fishery with Ryan Hanson, Cassie and Shawn Contois, McCabe’s Flooring, Cal’s Party Store, and The Compound Ski & Snowboard Shop.
