The Ramona Valley Humane Society & SPCA is seeking golfers and sponsors for its fifth annual Golfing for a Cause fundraiser.
The golf tournament is set for Friday, Aug. 15 at the Mt. Woodson Golf Club, 16422 N. Woodson Drive. Check-in starts at 7 a.m.
Four-person teams will play a scramble format. Individual golfers can be assigned to a team.
The entry fee is $150 per person by Friday, Aug. 1 or $175 per person after that date. Green fees, cart rental and a box lunch are included.
Ramona Valley Humane Society General Manager Charlotte Jensen said the goal of the fundraiser is to generate revenue for buying land in Ramona that can be developed with a permanent Humane Society facility.
“We’re asking for the community’s help in raising money so we can buy a piece of property and build a facility and house our animals in Ramona,” Jensen said.
Domestic animals such as dogs, cats and horses are currently being adopted remotely through the Ramona Valley Humane Society & SPCA general store at the corner of Eighth and Main streets.
Jensen said the store that sells gently used items partners with the Antique Corner store at the same location. A percentage of sales at the general store and at 10 independent vendors in the shop are donated to the Ramona Valley Humane Society, she said.
Jensen said the Humane Society is working with local animal rescues and veterinarians to have the animals cared for until they can be adopted.
“We currently have a picture book of the animals that are available for adoption,” she said. “We encourage people to come to the store and we will adopt them through the store there.”
The fundraising goal for this year’s Golfing for a Cause is estimated at between $7,500 and $10,000, said Don Jensen, Humane Society asset and capital acquisition and development manager and Charlotte Jensen’s husband.
The last four Golfing for a Cause golf tournament fundraisers raised a combined $19,000 in profit, Don Jensen said.
Don Jensen recently added a donation button to the RamonaValleyHumane.org website to collect monthly and one-time donations, he said.
A future fundraiser named “Strut Your Mutt” may also be hosted by the Ramona Valley Humane Society, Charlotte Jensen said. That fundraiser would be a luncheon fashion show with pets and their owners, she said.
The Jensens say stray animals in Ramona are currently being taken to the San Diego Humane Society facilities in Bonita and Carlsbad.
“We take donations and we really need help getting a piece of property so we can build our facility in Ramona,” Charlotte Jensen said. “Currently, we can’t house the animals here. We have to find kennels and shelters to help us and then we find foster families when we can until someone adopts a kitten or puppy.”
Sponsorships for Golfing for a Cause cost $100 for a hole sponsor or $50 for a memorial sponsor. Donations are also being accepted in exchange for dedicating a hole in honor or in memory of a pet at the golf tournament fundraiser.
Other activities at Golfing for a Cause include wine available from Lathom Wines and opportunity drawings for gift baskets. Stony Mountain Bar & Grill will be selling lunches during the event.
