ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – The Minnesota State Legislature passed a bill Monday, allowing Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) to make preparations for a major construction project.
The bill, H.F. 18, was passed as part of the larger special session of the state legislature. It allows RCTC to move previously appropriated funds towards the first phase of construction of a roof replacement for the Heintz Center, which is part of its West Campus.
The funds, which total $1,347,000, originally came from a 2023 capital investment bill. The money was earmarked to be used solely for the purpose of designing a renovation of space for the Career and Technical Education programs. H.F. 18 retroactively amended the 2023 bill, adding the roof replacement as a secondary use for the funds.
The Heintz Center hosts a variety of spaces, including classrooms, workshops, and a cafeteria.
A definitive timeline for the construction is not in place.
RCTC’s Executive Director of Communications, Marketing, and External Relations Nate Stoltman says that the language helps move the process along at a faster rate.
“We appreciate the legislature for including the language in the statute which will help us improve our facilities to keep our students warm, safe, and dry,” Stoltman said.
