CYNTHIANA, Ind. (WEHT) – Indiana’s Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith awards more than $1 million in total grant funding to the communities of Cynthiana and Birdseye. The grants are through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. Birdseye received $700,000 for their water treatment facility, while Cynthiana was awarded a check for $673,500.
The town began pushing for the grant funding as early as April of 2024, where social media posts cited a need for new pipes, valves and hydrants, as well as upgrades to Cynthiana’s water tower. Lieutenant Governor Beckwith says funding like this for a small community like Cynthiana goes a long way.

“Just the cost for maintaining towns is all that they can do to get by,” explains Beckwith, “so what OCRA is really designed to do is say, ‘Hey this is going to give you the resources to dream and actually build’. And we want these small towns to be building and thriving and growing.”
Cynthiana town officials say these upgrades would not be possible without this type of grant funding.
