GREECE, N.Y. – An 8-year-old girl in Greece is raising money for a diabetic alert dog through a lemonade stand this Sunday.

Victoria Munno, diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes three years ago, is hosting the event at the Mall at Greece Ridge from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Diabetic alert dogs are specially trained to detect changes in a person’s blood sugar levels by smelling their sweat and breath. These service animals cost around $7,000, but the Munno family believes a well-trained dog could be life-saving for Victoria.

“A lot of times there’s fake lows, when you lie on your sensor or something, you get an alert that’s not real,” said Kelly Munno.

“We try to monitor as best as possible, but sometimes the technology is not as reliable as the dog would be,” said Munno.

Victoria hopes to receive a golden doodle, her favorite type of dog, and plans to name it “Rosie.”
