No, League of Legends is not launching a cryptocurrency right now, Riot confirms

League of Legends is a lot of things. At its foundation, it’s an immensely popular MOBA. It’s also, thanks to a plethora of multimedia spin-offs, a TV show in the form of Arcane; a life sim, thanks to Bandle Tale; and a platform game in Song of Nunu. Another arena that LoL briefly looked to have ventured into earlier today was branded cryptocurrency. But Riot now confirms to PCGamesN that this was actually the result of a hacked social media account.

The account belonging to League of Legends‘ lead gameplay designer Matt Leung-Harrison shared a post on X explaining that the MOBA would be launching a “LOL coin” meant to tie into the game.

The post explained that the cryptocurrency was designed to meet player demand and would be used as an official currency on a Web3 network. It also claimed that the coin would be integrated with League of Legends, with the impact of its existence due to be explained at greater length on Riot’s official site in the near future.

As is the case with so many shocking coin announcements, the post was fake, the result of Leung-Harrison’s X account being hacked. After seeing the post and contacting Riot for verification, a spokesperson replied to PCGN to confirm that Leung-Harrison’s account had been compromised, that the crypto reveal is false, and that the studio is working to inform those who saw it not to click on any links in the post.
