BCSO has worked over 12,000,000 fraud cases that have targeted seniors using fraud and scams involving cryptocurrency
On Monday, I was honored to stand with Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier and other law enforcement partners from across the state as the Attorney General announced a crackdown on scams to protect seniors from frauds and scams with some of those crimes being committed by state prisoners using contraband technology.
The press conference not only discussed specific cases being worked by local and state law enforcement agencies, but also discussed the importance of education and awareness to one of the latest crime trends targeting Florida’s citizens…frauds that target our seniors using cryptocurrency.
In Brevard County alone, we have worked since 2021 in excess of 12,000,000 in fraud cases that have targeted our seniors using fraud and scams involving cryptocurrency.
Even worse, as discussed in today’s press conference by Attorney General Uthmeier, a large number of these types of cases are being perpetrated by inmates who are incarcerated in state prisons across the country.
The inmates illegally obtain cell phones inside the state prisons, which are then utilized to perpetrate criminal activity that takes the life savings and hundreds of thousands of dollars from our most vulnerable citizens, our seniors!
The press conference was also attended by Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, Commissioner Mark Glass of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Director Ricky Dixon of the Department of Corrections, and members of the Office of Statewide Prosecution.
