‘Never’ warning to everyone who uses online banking | Personal Finance | Finance

People who use online banking have been warned to “never” do five things by consumer champion platform Which?. Its expert said in a new social media post on Tuesday that there are “five golden rules to remember when using online banking”.

In a video, she began: “Never do your online banking with a mobile or laptop that no longer receives security updates.” She further explained that Windows 10, for example, will end its security support later this year, with no security updates after October 31. To be safe, you should upgrade or replace unsupported devices, the expert added.

The second tip is that you should never download an app outside of the official app store however, “malicious apps can still slip through the net”. If in doubt you should read any negative reviews and check the app’s permissions.

Other actions people who bank online are urged to take include never giving remote access to an unsolicited caller, and to never trust caller id – as scammers can fake names and numbers. Lastly, you should never use the same password or PIN twice, and you should always use two-factor authentication.

This, the Which? expert explains, is because even if a scammer has a login details they will need to pass an additional security check to get in. You should also pick a “strong and unique” password.
