National Banking Corporation dawns in on digital banking solutions


DIGITAL, as it stands, is often regarded as the future – whether in marketing, education, business, including the financial sector.

 Since it (digital) remains as a core driver of innovation and efficiency, businesses are delving into it. Quite seemingly, Papua New Guinea’s very own recently launched commercial bank, National Banking Corporation (NBC), has launched its VISA Debit Card last Thursday.

 The launch marks a milestone and a significant milestone as the financial institution embraces digital technology and innovation in its banking solution.

 Going forward, the seventh commercial bank aims to provide smart, convenient, and seamless payment options to its valued customers anywhere

 History in brief:

NBC was launched on Thursday, 10th April this year by Prime Minister James Marape, Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) Governor Elizabeth Genia, and NBC Chairman Darrell Seeto at Apec Haus in Port Moresby.

 It may be obvious if some did not know, but the fully fledged commercial bank was transitioned from the PNG’s reputable People’s Micro Bank. Initially, after it was granted a commercial banking license by the BPNG on the 14th of December 2024.

 Among other iconic commercial banks operating in the country, this commercial bank is more than just being praised by the Prime Minister, its considered to be a standout bank. 

As it was noted by the Prime Minister in his keynote speech that this bank will focus on getting the unbanked, preferably the 85 per cent of people in rural areas, banked.

 Dwell in this essential task, aligned with its goals and objectives, the commercial bank now venturing into the future is centred on making banking simpler and more accessible to its customers.

 Launch of the VISA Debit Card:

The evening of Thursday, 27 August, marks the new era of the proud commercial bank as the bank unveiled its VISA Debit Card.

The launch saw guests, customers, and staff of the NBC gather at their branch located at Vision City Mega Mall at Waigani, Port Moresby, to witness the product launch.

 It is not just a product, as it marks a new chapter, and it reflects the NBC’s robust obligation to transform the banking environment in the country.

 Speaking during the launch last Thursday, the chief executive officer of NBC, Paul Thornton, said: “We aim to create a system that is user-friendly but also seamlessly connected, ensuring that it meets the diverse needs of our community.”

NBC VISA Debit Card Packages:

The product – VISA Debit card underscores simpler, relevant, convenient, and accessible payments to meet its customers’ needs while also stepping forward to keep pace with the growing digital banking.

 This makes it easier for customers to make online payments more efficiently and conveniently anywhere in the world.

 “This introduction of our VISA Debit Card is another step in delivering on that promise,” said Mr Thornton, noting the bank’s objectives of making banking services simpler and relevant to its customers.

 “It puts the world within reach, enabling customers a secure and seamless payment option whether they are at home in PNG, abroad, or for online purchases.

 “It is more than just convenience. It’s about access, opportunity, and giving our people the same level of financial freedom enjoyed anywhere in the world.

Visions:

As mentioned previously, the commercial bank is striving to transform the country’s banking sector – prioritising its customers. VISA Debit Card launch is just an initial phase of what’s NBC’s broader transformation.

 “Our vision is clear – we aim to expand access to modern banking across the country by innovating with technology that brings our services closer to the people.

 “We’re committed to delivering products that bring our services simple, secure, and designed to meet real people’s needs.

 As part of its broader commitment to the customers it serves, the financial institution is planning to introduce more solutions to its banking services for efficiency and convenience.
