Kansas City Chiefs’ upcoming ESPN docuseries is banking on this from sports fans

It’s official: the Kansas City Chiefs will star in a six-part docuseries out later this year, according to a March 28 article in Deadline.

But the timing, of course, means that fans will have to be OK without a fairytale ending. This is no Hoosiers or Miracle on Ice — this story will contain footage through the team’s Super Bowl 2025 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, as they were attempting a historic “three-peat.”

The project is a joint venture between ESPN and Disney+.

“No team in sports has been more captivating over the last decade than the Kansas City Chiefs,” the series’ executive producer, Connor Schell, told the outlet. “To get the chance to go behind-the-scenes of the team’s modern-day dynasty with its signature stars, and weave that story together with the Chiefs’ history and incomparable legacy of Lamar Hunt, whose imprint on the club and the league is still felt every Sunday, is a remarkable opportunity.”

Schell is producing it via his company Words + Pictures, in association with Skydance Sports, which has a deal with the NFL, NFL Films, Mahomes’ 2PM Productions and the Chiefs’ inhouse production division.

“This series will explore the legacy of the Chiefs franchise while also showcasing the emotional highs and lows of building a championship-winning team,” Burke Magnus, president of content at ESPN, told Deadline. “From the brilliance of Patrick Mahomes to the leadership of Andy Reid and the passion of Chiefs Kingdom, this project will showcase the drama, intensity, and heart that make this team a global phenomenon.”

Of course, there are plenty of victories to include in the series, even without the recent Super Bowl. Cameras were rolling during the team’s impressive regular season, and its AFC win. That Lamar Hunt Trophy will also kick off some history of how Lamar founded the team, and its legacy with its current owner, Lamar’s son Clark Hunt.
