Building Relationships with Private Banking at Central Pacific Bank

Financial transactions that require the help of a banker usually require time and effort. Like making a trip to the bank or calling a 1-800 number.

Private banking is different. Included in high levels of service are direct phone numbers for calls and texts, and an email address where help is available virtually any time. A private banker will also meet you at your home, office or somewhere more convenient.

“I have signed loan documents at the airport,” says Anna-Lena Zanolini, vice president and senior private banking officer for Central Pacific Bank.

Private banking services can often save the day. Zanolini says she once handled a transaction for a client who called from a ski lift in Utah, while she was having dinner in Italy.

“At CPB, we focus on specialized markets with a high level of customization, personalized service, and industry expertise,” says Zanolini, who has 28 years of experience in the industry. “The banker-client relationship is a priority in everything we do.”

Indeed, it’s not unusual to be invited to clients’ family weddings and graduations, Zanolini says.

Not all financial institutions offer private banking or wealth management services, however. Those that do have different qualifications for levels of net worth, income and investable assets.

Although each banker-client relationship at CPB is confidential, unique, and customized in a personalized manner, research shows that affluent individuals have a common set of needs. If you are an affluent or high-income earner, you’re going to have to strategize for taxes, for example, Zanolini says.

CPB’s private banking services are complimentary to clients in the program, from customized lines of credit, loans and deposit products to financial planning, trust and estate planning, and wealth management services.

Under the umbrella of the bank’s Wealth Division, a coordinated team of professionals works in tandem with private banking, personal trust and investment services. “We bring in the subject matter experts as appropriate. The private banker often acts as a quarterback in that relationship,” Zanolini says.

When turbulent financial markets strike, availability and proactive communication are especially key. “During times of uncertainty and elevated volatility I remind clients of their long-term goals and objectives, and how those align with their investment portfolio,” Zanolini says. “We reassure clients that the fundamentals are in place.”

CPB was founded by World War II Nisei veterans who served in the legendary 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 100th Infantry Battalion, and Military Intelligence Service. “There is a very strong legacy there. It resonates with a lot of people here in the local community,” Zanolini says.

CPB is considered a smaller bank in Hawai‘i, which it uses to its advantage over larger banks. “We use our ‘smallness’ to make the banking experience more intimate and higher touch. Our clients love being a bigger fish in a smaller pond,” Zanolini says.

One of CPB’s niche programs caters to medical and dental professionals. The White Coat Program uniquely services and provides private banking angles exclusively for them.

“We are the preeminent bank for dentists in Hawai‘i, hands down,” Zanolini says.

While the banking business is highly commoditized, and “you can get a CD anywhere,” Zanolini says, “what sets us apart is ourselves, our service level. The speed, the professionalism, ultimately, it comes down to service. It comes down to relationships.”
