AI generates humorous installations from geo-localized keywords at london exhibition

Fabio Lattanzi Antinori questions data dynamics in society

Fabio Lattanzi Antinori’s Office Party exhibition in London invites us to question the production and consumption of data, exploring power dynamics, beliefs, and the way our perception of reality is collectively shaped and disseminated within society. The artworks are inspired by the term ‘keywords’, delving into the narratives of data, the agency of digital technology, and how these elements shape the future of society.

With a touch of humor and irony, the standout work, Keywords Karaoke explores data’s impact on society, inspired by the way digital technology is shaping our notion of reality, history, and interaction. The machine perched on a powder coated aluminum stand plays songs with lyrics and music generated by an AI model using geo-localized keywords around the area of the show.

office party exhibition utilizes ai to explore idea of ‘keywords’

Keywords Karaoke stems from the idea that every time we search for something online, our input terms are recorded and combined to build a personality profile for each one of us. This data is then used to forecast our future behaviors, predict the products or services we might want to buy, as well as understand and influence our political preferences and social behaviours. Behind the scenes, there exists a vast market that commodifies keywords gathered through elusive intelligent algorithms, creating profiles for all individuals which are then sold to advertisers and private companies.

Mounted on a white backdrop, Fabio Lattanzi Antinori’s Highly Predictable installation presents the price of a selection of keywords on a custom-shaped LED screen, displaying online searches relevant to the Hammersmith area. Fat Fingers, meanwhile, presenting mistyped keywords and their prices, alludes to the idea that secret extraction won’t leave anything unexploited. The artist has selected these terms from Raymond Williams’ 1988 seminal book on keywords, reflecting on society’s evolving aspects over time. Ahead, Another Sign is a body of work featuring quotes from books, newspapers, and web media, cut out of security screens, together highlighting the unsustainable economic framework, overconsumption, or personal limits. The Office Party exhibition will run from April to October 2024.
