Hudsonville Ice Cream announces $40M investment in Holland

A popular ice cream maker headquartered in Holland will move forward with plans for a $40 million expansion, following initial approval for a performance-based grant July 29 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

According to documents provided by the MEDC, Hudsonville Ice Cream requested and was approved for $700,000 in grant funds, helping to create 44 new jobs in West Michigan.

The starting wages for those new positions will start at $22 per hour, plus benefits, just above the Regional Median Wage of $21.97.

The investment will see renovations and modifications to the company’s existing dairy production room, and space currently housing an ice cream line will be changed to accommodate a new novelty bar production line. That’s in addition to other property improvements and the purchase of new machinery and equipment.

Hudsonville Ice Cream also requested a 15-year, 100% State Essential Services Assessment Exemption for up to almost $600,000.

According to Lakeshore Advantage, local officials are expected to support the company’s expansion in the form of a tax abatement, pending approval by Holland City Council.

Lakeshore Advantage President Jennifer Owens said the company is a “standout example” of a legacy company looking to innovate and grow in West Michigan.

“With roots in our region for nearly a century, and a decade of remarkable growth, this company’s continued investment underscores their commitment to the region,” Owens said.

The expansion project is the latest for the longstanding company, which was founded in 1926.

In September 2018, the company announced the completion of a $1.6 million expansion. The project at 345 E. 48th St. included a new silo alcove and pilot plant to allow for more flavor creations and an expanded distribution network.

The company has grown from 30 employees in 2016 to 258.
