MEDINA, Ohio — City Council’s Finance Committee has given its blessing for the police department to pursue funding that would help pay for a part-time community engagement officer.
The department is applying for $167,900 over a three-year period from the Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services Program.
“This would be a part-time position, but a sworn-in police officer,” Police Chief Ed Kinney told members of the finance committee earlier this month.
Kinney explained that proposed legislation to create the position of community engagement officer is set to appear before council during a future meeting.
“I get we are putting the cart before the horse,” Kinney said, adding that the department doesn’t yet know if council will approve the creation of the new position.
“But if we do receive the grant funding and council chooses not to approve this position, then we can just turn down the funding.
“If we don’t receive the funding and the position is approved, then we could use carry-forward funds to pay for the salary of the officer.”
Jazz Under the Stars
In other news, ORMACO will bring its third Jazz Under the Stars summer concert to the Medina Square at 7 p.m. Saturday.
This concert will feature Organic Trio, a group that taps into the current Hammond organ revival. The group covers a modern repertoire, as well as iconic standards from the jazz lexicon.
The trio features Chris Hovan, Cliff Metcalf and Chandler Carpenter.
