President Donald Trump on Friday slammed California over the unexpected “disappearance” of $100 million in charitable donations that were intended to go to Los Angeles County residents impacted by raging wildfires.
California GOP Rep. Kevin Kiley has called for the Justice Department to investigate the distribution of funds, which appeared to have gone to charities and nonprofits instead of residents who lost their homes to the fires.
The money was raised during a one-night star-studded fundraiser titled “FireAid” at both the SoFi Stadium and the Forum. Stars like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Olivia Rodrigo, performed at the event and host Miles Teller claimed “all the money raised will go directly to people who need it now and long-term efforts to build it back.”
The FireAid charity told a Fox affiliate last week that the money has gone to charities and that it cannot directly send the money to individuals and never intended to give it to people directly, Fox News reported.
“‘Fireaid’ is a total disaster. Looks like another Democrat inspired scam,” Trump posted to Truth Social. “$100 million is missing. Was supposed to go to the Los Angeles fire victims, fires that, with proper management, would never have even happened.”
“Governor Newscum refused to release billions of gallons of water from northern California, and the Pacific Northwest,” he continued. “What a difference it would have made! I have since overruled him, and it is now released. All federal housing permits have also been approved, the city is years late. Get the fire victims their approvals to rebuild, and do it now!”
A Los Angeles Times investigation found that the funds were given to 100 nonprofits in the Los Angeles area, which have confirmed they received the money to feed and clothe survivors, provide mental health services and save animals.
