COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The home of the Columbus Blue Jackets could be getting a major ‘slap shot’ renovation in the coming years, and could partially be funded through unclaimed funds in the state’s biennial budget.
Nationwide Arena turns 25 years old in September, and it’s never had a major renovation before.
With work expected to begin as early as next summer, it’s looking to the state for some extra financial help.
“We’re competing for events on a regional and national level,” explained Mike Gatto, Chief Venue Officer for Columbus Arena Sports and Entertainment. “We have NCAA Championship events and endless concerts, like Paul McCartney.”
What are the renovation plans?
There are major plans to add a brand-new entrance, outdoor terrace, plaza bar, and expanded team shop over the next decade. Gatto said it costs a total of $400 million.
“These renovations are important for us to reinvest in the building, so that we’re competitive with other markets for the next 25, 30 years,” Gatto added.
The renovations also include upgraded technology, walkways and escalators, improved entry, and better seating– all to improve the guest experience.
The Cleveland Browns are getting $600 million in public funding from the state’s operating budget. Additional dollars are set aside for stadium projects statewide and Nationwide Arena could likely benefit.
“We’re working with the Convention Facilities Authority to work on what the procedure is to obtain those funds,” Gatto said. “Once we have that laid out, we’ll make a formal ask.”
“Our vision for Columbus is to be the sports and entertainment hub of the Midwest,” Gatto added. “The Arena District is the economic engine of the crown jewel of venues here in Central Ohio.”
If Nationwide Arena loses out on operating budget funding, it will have to rely solely on public and private funds, potentially delaying the renovations.
