Eminem joins Detroit WNBA superteam of investors: Report

  • The team of Detroit investors aiming to bring the WNBA back to Detroit has reportedly added rapper Eminem.
  • The bid would revive the legacy of the Detroit Shock, which won three championships in 12 seasons (1998-2009) before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

A superteam of local investors — led by Pistons owner Tom Gores and his wife, Holly — are trying to bring the WNBA back to Detroit.

That group is reportedly gaining even more star power, with the addition of rapper Eminem.

Sportico reported Wednesday that the superstar has joined the bid. The list of big names also includes Lions quarterback Jared Goff, Basketball Hall of Famers Grant Hill and Chris Webber, Pistons vice chairman Arn Tellem, Lions principal owner Sheila Hamp, General Motors CEO Mary Barra and others.

The bid would revive the legacy of the Detroit Shock, who won three championships iin their 12 seasons in metro Detroit (1998-2009) before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“This is an exciting opportunity to welcome the WNBA back to Detroit and bring additional investment and economic activity into the city,” Gores said in a release from the team in January. “For the WNBA this is home, and our bid represents an unprecedented opportunity for the league to come full circle and effect a long-hoped-for Detroit homecoming. No city is more prepared to embrace the team as a community asset that drives unity and common ground.”

Eminem, one of the best-selling rap artists of all time, is one of the most well-known Detroit residents worldwide due to his prolific music career in the 21st century. He has also been one of the prominent celebrity fans for the Detroit Lions during their rise over the last three years.
